The story behind the song
What expensive really means
They called you high maintenance. What they meant was: you stopped accepting discounts on who you are.
We spend years discounting ourselves. We make our voices quieter so we don’t disrupt the room. We swallow our ambition so we don’t look like too much. We stay in places where we have to apologize for knowing our own value.
Then one day, the quiet breaks. You stop looking for validation from people who didn’t help you build. You look at the bills you paid with your own hands, the late nights at the kitchen table, the quiet mornings when nobody clapped. And you realize you owe no one an explanation for surviving.
I’m Too Expensive isn’t about money. It’s the moment you realize what your peace cost you, and you stop lowering the price.
I wrote it for the morning drive. Streetlights still on, coffee still warm, the second you remember who you are. Low bass, a chant you can sing after one listen, and one scream for every woman who was told to wait and went anyway.
